Part III: Reflection "Looking Back at the Hollywood 10"
As you learned from the lecture, in 1947, 10 members of the Hollywood film industry were investigated by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), in Congress. The committee alleged there was communist influence in the American motion picture business. These prominent screenwriters and directors, who became known as the Hollywood Ten, received jail sentences and were banned from working for the major Hollywood studios.
How does this historical event relate to your life today? In the space below, answer the reflection questions that we will use as the basis for our discussion next period. 1) Give a school appropriate example of a time when you were accused of doing something that you didn't actually do. You can also use an example of when you have been stereotyped because of who you are and/or something you were involved with.
2) How did It feel to be falsely accused and/or stereotyped? Did the person or group ever admit they were in the wrong?
3) In general, do you think the actions (or beliefs) you display outside of school, sports or a job should have any impact on your continued or future involvement in that activity? Explain your answer.
4) Can you think of a situation where it does seem fair to punish people at school, a job, sport, etc for something they did outside of those activities?
